FRIDA - THE WOMAN AND THE FASHION LOVER - article originally published in the Swedish magazine Damenas, on January 1979
Her name is Mrs. Anni-Frid Lyngstad. But she simply calls herself Frida. She gladly admits that she loves being famous. She can be a little reserved before you get to know her. In fact, she is really shy and is scared that people will expect her to be something that she is not. So what is she like? Frida is a person with German neatness and Norwegian stamina. She has been through many many depressions, but today she is more harmonic than ever. A lot of that she gives her husband Benny Andersson credit for. They share a unique trust and openess between them. Frida is also a very warm and caring person. For example, she sit through a whole night talking to someone who has a problem. And she doesn't quit until the problem is solved. Her eyes can turn really grim when she gets angry, but she is not the one to hold a grudge. But she likes to clear the air and part as friends. She thinks that's the only way to have good relationships with people. She is also as stubborn as a mule. And she has a great sense of humour. She can put on a one-woman-show when she is in the mood for that. She is very witty and quick with biting comments.
She has very high demands on others, but even higher expectations for herself. She is a professional when she is working and ambitious to the edge of perfection. She never consideres anything complete until she is completely satisified with the result. She never turns down a fan asking for an autograph and is very humbled by her audience. If you are, you will never become a diva.
Frida is the typical night person. But of course she has to get up early in the mornings to be able to fit everything into her busy schedule, but she needs a couple of hours to be 100% ready to tackle the new day. She always does her own make-up. She has learned how by watching others. Before TV-recordings or shows it can take up to three hours to get the hair and make-up ready.
At least three times a week she practices balett. Partly for the exercise and partly for the training to be on stage. Sometimes she even manages to play some tennis. Frida has no problems with her weight. She starts everyday with porridge, during the day she never eats anything but fish and vegetables. She doesn't drink anything stronger than white wine. But every now and she has a chocolate biscuit.
When Frida was a little girl she went to the library and borrowed ten books every week. She has always enjoyed reading and apart from the four daily papers she reads a lot of books. During one period she only read female authors like Doris Lessing and Anaïs Nin. Among her favourites are The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien and all Leon Uris' books, especially Mila 18.
Wintertime is a difficult time for Frida. She would prefer to go into hibernation. The darkness and the cold affects her mind. Then she turns to art. Christos packaged things, Margrittes surreal paintings and Francis Bacons work are things that makes her happy. Every now and then she paints something herself. She got an A in drawing at school.
Stageoutfits must be glamourus according to Frida. She would never consider wearing jeans on stage. There has to be a feeling of party when she performs. She is woman and carefull about her femininity and does not consider herself a "sex symbol". Frida loves clothes and likes to "dress up". She is also convinced that women dress up for other women's sake, not for the men's.
There's a lot of sadness in Frida, but funnily enough she is not very romantic. She is happy with her life and happy with herself. It's something you have got to be to be able to give of yourself to others.

FRIDA - A MULHER E A AMANTE DA MODA - reportagem originalmente publicada na revista sueca Damenas, em janeiro de 1979
Seu nome é Sra. Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Mas ela chama a si mesma de Frida, simplesmente. E admite, com prazer, que ama ser famosa. Ela pode ser um pouco reservada antes de você conhecê-la. Na verdade, Frida é muito tímida e tem medo de que as pessoas moldem uma imagem errada a seu respeito. Afinal, quem é ela? Frida é uma pessoa com o bom gosto alemão e com o vigor norueguês, a qual atravessou muitas depressões, ainda que hoje esteja mais harmônica do que nunca. Muito disso se deve a seu marido, Benny Andersson, a quem Frida dá o crédito. O casal compartilha uma confiança e uma abertura única. Frida é também uma pessoa muito acolhedora e solidária. Ela chega, por exemplo, a atravessar uma noite inteira, sentada, conversando com alguém que tem um problema. E não descansa até que a questão seja resolvida. Seus olhos podem se tornar realmente desoladores quando fica zangada, ainda que não guarde rancor. Gosta de estar em equilíbrio com amigos, pois acha que é a única maneira de ter boas relações com as pessoas. Frida também é teimosa como uma mula. E tem um grande senso de humor. Ela pode se expor mais quando seu humor lhe permite tal coisa. E é muito espirituosa e muito rápida com comentários mordazes.
Frida exige muito dos outros, mas ainda mais de si mesma. Ela é uma profissional quando está trabalhando e ambiciosa com o intuito de atingir a perfeição, de modo que nunca considera nada completo até que esteja completamente satisfeita com o resultado. Ela nunca dá as costas a um fã que lhe pede um autógrafo, sendo muito humilde com seu público. Caso contrário, não é possível se tornar uma diva.
Frida é uma típica pessoa da noite. Mas é claro que tem de se levantar cedo pela manhã para poder encaixar tudo em sua movimentada agenda, precisando de duas horas para estar 100% pronta e enfrentar o novo dia. Ela sempre faz a sua própria maquiagem. Aprendeu observando os outros. Antes de gravações de TV ou shows, por outro lado, pode demorar até três horas para ter o cabelo e a maquiagem prontos.
Pelo menos três vezes por semana Frida pratica balé. Em parte pelos exercícios e em parte pela formação de que precisa para o palco. Às vezes, ainda consegue jogar tênis. Frida não tem problemas com seu peso. Ela começa todos os dias com um prato de mingau e durante o restante do dia nunca come coisa alguma que não seja peixe e legumes. Frida não bebe nada forte, a não ser vinho branco. Mas, às vezes, come biscoitos de chocolate.
Quando Frida era menina, ia à biblioteca e tomava emprestados dez livros por semana. Ela sempre gostou de ler e, além dos quatro jornais diários que lê, também se deleita com um monte de livros. Durante certo período leu somente obras escritas por mulheres, como Doris Lessing e Anaïs Nin. Entre seus livros preferidos estão O Senhor dos Anéis, de Tolkien, e todos os romances de Leon Uris, especialmente Mila 18.
O inverno é um tempo difícil para Frida. Ela prefere hibernar em tal época, já que a escuridão e o frio afetam sua mente. Então Frida se volta à arte. Os artefatos religiosos, as pinturas surrealistas de Margritte e a obra de Francis Bacon são coisas que a deixam feliz. Às vezes, pinta algo por conta própria. Quando estava na escola, inclusive, recebeu um A na aula de desenho.
As roupas a serem usadas nas apresentações devem ser glamurosas, segundo Frida. Ela nunca usaria jeans no palco. Tem de haver um sentido de festa, quando se apresenta. Como mulher, tem cuidado com sua feminilidade e não se considera um "símbolo sexual". Frida adora roupas e gosta de "se vestir", estando convencida de que as mulheres vestem-se para outras mulheres, não para os homens.
Existe muita tristeza em Frida, mas, curiosamente, ela não é muito romântica. Está feliz com sua vida e feliz consigo mesma. Tem que ser assim, para poder dar de si aos outros.
